As the IT industry is seeing trends in the SMAC (Social, Mobile, Analytics, and Cloud), IT Service Management (ITSM) is under constant evolution.
Gartner predicts that by 2017, the SMAC stack will drive more than 26% of the total enterprise software market revenue, an increase from 12% in 2012 – representing over $104 billion in new revenue from this stack.
According to Gartner, 50% of large enterprises will have hybrid cloud deployments by 2017.
According to AXELOS’s ‘The Importance of ITIL ® A Global View – 2014 and Beyond’ ITIL was positively viewed as growing in importance due to trends like Cloud and Agile – 46% of 380 global respondents viewed ITIL as increased in importance; 49% viewed ITIL as staying the same in importance.
ITIL adoption is increasing with the growing importance of cloud computing.
From Latin America, 68% of respondents said ITIL is becoming more important
From Asia Pacific, 52% of respondents said ITIL is becoming more important
From EMEA 35% of respondents said ITIL is becoming more important
From North America, 35% of respondents said ITIL is becoming more important
According to itSMF USA’s ‘Service Management not just for IT anymore’ survey 2014, more than 50% of the organizations surveyed are either applying or planning to apply service management principles in business areas outside of IT.
In 53% of organizations, IT is the champion for this movement; non-IT leaders are leading the charge in the other 47%.
The expanding capabilities of technology are driving organizations to apply service management outside of IT.
Today’s IT organizations are using several different frameworks. But, 64% of organizations using service management in non-IT areas are using ITIL.
A key indicator for greater ITIL adoption across the organizations is how many people took up ITIL certifications for the calendar year 2014. According to AXELOS ‘Quarter 3, 2014 Consolidated Regional Exam Figures’, there were nearly 214,000 people who took ITIL certification exams across the world in 2014 till the end of October.

According to PayScale.com, the Highest average annual salary of a certified ITIL Expert can go up to ~USD 162,000 in the USA, ~USD 182,000 in Switzerland, ~USD 140,000 in Australia, ~USD 133,000 in the UK, ~USD 130,000 in UAE (as on December 1, 2014)
